Web Design Wednesday — Navigating the Web with Parallax Scrolling

An interesting part of web design is how websites and designers create ingenious ways to navigate the web. With the introduction of HTML5 and CSS3 things are getting a little more interesting.

Designers today are now looking at web navigation as a way of storytelling – enticing visitors to click though a link or to continue scrolling down. An interesting innovation that’s being used today by web designers is the Parallax Scrolling. This type of navigation has given rise to different creative websites and shows other innovative ways we can present information on the web.

Parallax Scrolling is a technique initially developed in 2D animation and video games. This technique makes use of a layered display, wherein background images move slower than the foreground images. This process results into an illusion of depth in 2D animation.

Here are a few things we can possibly do with parallax scrolling:

Infograph

Parallax scrolling is now being used to create interactive infographs on the web. You can checkout Evans Halshaw’s James Bond Cars infograph presented in Parallax.

Portfolio

One way of showing skill in web design is to create an online version of your portfolio, another way is to make your portfolio interactive with Parallax scrolling. Check out Ian James Cox’s online portfolio and Phase 2 Design’s website.

How-to

Another possible way to interactively present a How-to, apart from video tutorials, is through Parallax scrolling. Because of Parallax scrolling’s capability to streamline information in one fluid animation, creating how-to’s can be easier, and people will be able to follow through the instructions easily.

Check out drugtreatment.com’s interesting take on the drug detox process.

Creative Storytelling

Apart from interesting and informational websites in Parallax, web designers are now also weaving stories online that are made in the same technique. You can checkout Jess and Russ’ love story on their website, and Lost World Fairs’ fictional history of Atlantis.

What’s in store for the Future?

We can expect web developers and designers to create a parallax version of social media sites. Just imagine how Facebook’s and Twitter’s timeline and newsfeed would look like in this animation technique. In a couple of years and we’ll be seeing these visions come to life. We’ll just have to wait and enjoy the ride for now.

Design a Clean and Modern Pricing Table in Photoshop

Photoshop is often used to create graphics and layouts for web designs. In this tutorial, we will explain how to create a pricing table for a hosting company using a combination of vector shapes and layer styles. Let’s get started!

Tutorial Assets

The following assets were used during the production of this tutorial.

Step 1: Preparation

Let’s start by making a new file (Command/Ctrl + N) with size 800 pixels × 600 pixels.

Step 2

Add Adjustment Layer Solid Color to be used as background. Select #f7f8eb for its color.

Step 3

Grab free pixel pattern from PSDfreemium. Double click Adjustment Layer to add Pattern Overlay using this pattern.

Step 4

Add new layer and fill it with black. Click Filter > Noise > Add Noise.

Step 5

From Layers panel, set its blend mode to Screen.

Step 6: Base

We’ll start by drawing the base. Draw a rounded rectangle shape with radius of 10 px. Set its fill to very light blue with no Stroke.

Step 7

Double click the layer to add Layer Style. Apply Stroke and Inner Shadow using following settings.

Step 8: Title Bar

Duplicate the shape and change its color. Add rectangle shape on its lower part and set its mode to Subtract. Now, we have a title bar.

Step 9

Add Stroke, Inner Glow, and Gradient Overlay using following settings.

Below you can see result of the Layer Style onto the title bar.

Step 10

Add table title. Add letterpress effect onto the text by applying Drop Shadow.

Step 11: Price Info

Add bigger text for its price. Use medium gray as its color. Apply Inner Shadow and Drop Shadow to add Emboss effect.

Below you can see difference before and after adding Layer Styles.

Step 12

Add another detail inside the price info, such as currency sign and its billing information.

Step 13: Item Lists

Duplicate table base and set its color to #f0f0f0. Add circle and rectangle on top. Set their mode to Subtract.

Step 14

Add Layer Styles Stroke, Inner Glow, and Gradient Overlay.

Step 15

Add new layer on top of the shape. Paint white on its top side. Hit Command/Ctrl + Alt + G to convert the layer to Clipping Mask. Make new layer underneath the shape and then paint black for its shadow.

Here’s the result in 100% view.

Step 16

Add features list items using Type tool.

Step 17

Add 1 px line shape between each list item. Use black for its color.

Step 18

Make sure the lines are still selected. Click More Options and then change Stroke option to dotted line.

Step 19

Add layer mask onto the lines layer and the paint its left and right edges with black.

Step 20: Button

Draw rounded rectangle shape with color #a7bed5.

Step 21

Add Layer Styles Stroke, Inner Glow, and Gradient Overlay.

Step 22

Duplicate the button and place it behind the original. Move it a few pixels down.

Step 23

Use same Layer Styles but this time increase the Gradient Overlay Opacity to make it darker.

We also add Drop Shadow to add soft shadow around the button.

This is the button appearance.

Step 24

Add text. Apply white Drop Shadow to add letterpress effect onto the text.

Step 25: Duplication

Select all pricing table layers and hit Command/Ctrl + G to put them in a group layer. Alt-drag the group layer to duplicate it. Make three tables.

Step 26

Off course, we don’t want it to be identical. So, change its text.

Step 27: Featured Plan

We want to feature one of the pricing plan by differentiating it. Pull second pricing table up. Make sure to keep the title bar aligned.

Step 28

We also want to make sure the list items are all aligned. Select the text and its line underneath it, rearrange its position. Make sure to leave some more room because we want to add more list items.

Step 29

Rearrange button position to match the table size.

Step 30

Modify the base shape to make it taller.

Step 31

Add more list items.

Step 32

Place second pricing table and pull right side of the first pricing table.

Step 33

Below, you can see the result before and after editing the shape.

Step 34

We want to lift the featured plan and make it seems taller by adding shadow. First, Command/Ctrl-click the featured base to make a selection based on its shape.

Step 35

Make new layer and fill selection with black. Soften it by adding Gaussian Blur.

Step 36

Reduce its layer Opacity.

Step 37

Make new layer and draw a black soft line using brush tool.

Step 38

Hit Command/Ctrl + T and then click Warp button. Select Arch for its mode.

Step 39

Rotate the warped line and place it behind the featured plan.

Step 40

Reduce its Opacity.

Step 41

Add another shadow on its other side.

Step 42

Command/Ctrl-click both regular tables. Place the shadows layers into a group layer. Click Add Layer Mask to add layer mask onto the group layer.

Step 43

To add mode contrast onto the featured plan, we also want to edit its color. Change title base color to orange. To match its color, we also need to modify its Layer Styles option.

Step 44

Edit title bar text color to white and its Drop Shadow to black.

10 Useful Online CSS Tools You Must Use

If you are a web developer then you might be aware of Cascading Style Sheets or CSS. However, for beginners, I won’t be describing it in detail here, but yes, in short, CSS or Cascading Style Sheets is basically something that can be used to beautify elements of a website. It empowers you to define specific properties for HTML tags in one go. For example;

If you use Div tags in your HTML, you need to define their properties every time you have a new tag <div style=”width: 100px; height: 100px”></div>. However, with the use of CSS you can set a particular standard for all your div tags in one go, like; div {width: 100px; height: 100px; } , this would make all your HTML divs 100px wide and 100px long. In addition, beginners can learn more about CSS on W3Schools.

Prefixr

Writing a Cross-Browser Compatible CSS can be tough, unless you have complete expertise in Cascading Style Sheets. But Prefixr makes it really easy for you to have a Cross-Browser CSS within seconds. What you need is to select the formatting and here you go with a live and workable CSS code.

CSS3 PIE

In today’s time almost all web browsers support CSS3. However, there are people who still use old versions of Internet Explorer, and we all know IE (Internet Explorer) makes a web developer’s life miserable, as its older versions hardly support any of the CSS3 Properties. This is where CSS3 PIE is useful, so must use it to know its capabilities.

Clean CSS

To make a website perfect, a Clean CSS file is pretty much required, as it makes editing very easy and reduces the time taken in editing. There is nothing better than Clean CSS to make your CSS files flawless. Also, it formats and optimizes your CSS completely.

CSS3 Generator

If you really don’t want to waste your time writing CSS3 Styles and Properties on your own, then this is the right tool for you. CSS3 Generator is capable of producing codes for most of the CSS3 Styles and Properties within seconds.

CSS Menu Maker

CSS based menus are always good for websites, as they can efficiently decrease the page loading time. But making a CSS Menu could prove to be a time consuming task, so why not use a dynamic tool, which can do that for you quickly. CSS Menu Maker is a perfect tool to make CSS based menus, where you just need to decide what type of menu you need, like; Dropdown, Vertical, Horizontal or Flyout.

Quick Form Builder

Forms are an integral part of websites, as they are the main source of collecting information for the website visitors. But creating a form with valid fields is not as easy as it may sound to many people. But with Quick Form Builder you can produce valid forms that are fully accessible.

IE6 CSS Fixer

We all are living in the year 2013, and technology is advancing day by day, but still there are people who don’t go for the latest techniques by sticking to their old ways. Similarly, there are people who still use Internet Explorer version 6.0, which makes it really difficult for web developers to make websites compatible with it. However, with IE6 Fixer you can live without a worry, as it fixes your CSS accordingly, and makes your website run just like it should on any other web browser.

CSS3 3D Transforms

With CSS3 you can introduce many exciting features in your website like 3D transformation. However, in order to do that, you must have all the required knowledge about CSS3, but if you don’t have it right now, then don’t worry, as you can leave this task on CSS3 3D Transforms. It can create CSS3 based Gradients, Box Properties, 3D Transformation, etc.

CSS Compressor

If your website takes a lot of time to load the web pages than your competitors’ websites, then you may lose your visitors to them. And to avoid that, you can compress your CSS file, which will not only increase your web page loading speed, but will also save the bandwidth it consumes.

CSS3Gen

Css3Gen is like a one stop shop for CSS3 Styles and properties. With this awesome tool, you can generate CSS based Buttons for your website, make border radius, use shadow effect on any of the available box elements or on text as well, and can also produce Gradients.

If you think we missed out on your favorite CSS tool, just drop us a message below, and we’ll try to add that in our future blog post on CSS tools.

You! Be Informed! #0035: WordPress and Zenfolio

Hello everyone, before we end this awesome week, let’s take a quick look first at some relevant news that’s happening in the world of arts and design. And this week, we are giving our You! Be Informed! Segment something different as we will be discussing some great news for our readers who are also in to photography.

So instead of the usual graphic design conferences and contests, we’ll be talking about two popular websites on the Internet that will certainly make photographers and enthusiasts jump for joy when they hear the news that these two sites will bring in the coming future.

WordPress

Automattic, the creators of the popular blogging tool WordPress has finally seen the potential of photographers as a viable market for their services as they announced to roll out a vertical for portfolio sites just this week.

Although WordPress has long been used by a lot of photographers, designers, videographers and other people in the creative field as an online portfolio to showcase their work to the world, most of them only use portfolio-like themes in the past. And this announcement is the first time that WordPress is purposely creating a specific vertical to cater to the needs of these consumer groups.

Currently, users can choose from around 30 portfolio themes, all of which of course comes with the usual add-on services and support as with other WP themes such as access to CSS for more customization for an additional $30/year or $60/year for VideoPress service that allows users to embed HD videos.

Zenfolio

After Adobe’s acquisition of Behance, another portfolio site by the name of Zenfolio has been acquired by Art.com. Zenfolio has made a name for itself for the past 6 years or so by providing online photography and sales solutions for professional photographers and enthusiasts. Its subscription-based services allow photographers a convenient way to create their own website and sell their creations to clients.

Having said this, the acquisition seems a very logical way for both companies to expand and serve more customers. As Art.com Inc. is one of the world’s largest online specialty retailers of high quality wall art, it provides a bigger market for Zenfolio users to sell their products. On the other hand, Art.com benefits from the acquisition as Zenfolio users will definitely add value to the websites collection of purchasable goods.

At this point, both websites will continue to operate as stand-alone sites. However, it is quite interesting how all the cards will fall into place and how the two companies will develop. Nevertheless, we hope that this acquisition works for the better especially for the benefit of their customers.

So there you go guys. Which news are you most excited about? Do tell us by leaving a comment below.
