Using the Cloud in Web Design

Cloud computing is revolutionizing the way web designers do their work, from designing to storing and sharing files. Instead of having to rely on one local computer or server to access software and projects, designers now have the ability to access these elements anywhere, and on any device. This technology has made collaboration easier than ever, with the ability to quickly share and discuss ideas, mockups and finalized designs quickly and easily with very little time spent arranging the logistics.

Below outlines more about the cloud and how it can benefit you as a designer.

How the Cloud Works

The internet is structured so that all the digital files that make up websites are stored in central, physical hard drives. Then when an internet user makes a search, these servers respond by displaying the correct website or search results on the user’s browser. The cloud – instead of putting all the weight of supporting files on one of these servers – uses the servers collectively, as a client-server mechanism. It utilizes certain resources from a combination of the hard drives to lower barriers and deliver information more quickly. If you’re looking for more information, this cloud computing guide by Xero provides a helpful foundational understanding and a pretty funny video of people trying to explain the cloud themselves.

More importantly for designers, the cloud’s reliance on the collective group of servers allows it to hold powerful tools, applications and software that can be accessed from anywhere.

To put the concept of cloud computing into context and to help you visualize it in action, think about the answers to these questions:

1)   Do you have a Gmail or other email account?
2)   Have you ever used Google Docs to share working documents with others?
3)   Do you have pictures and videos on your Facebook or other social networking site?

If you answered yes, then you have used the cloud. The convenient ability to access your email from anywhere and on any device has been around for a while, but most people don’t realize that it is known as cloud computing. Google Docs is a newer application of the cloud, and makes sharing and editing documents as a team much easier in folders contained in the web. The same goes for keeping photos and posts on social networking sites.

You get the picture. The cloud greatly increases speed and convenience, and offers many more benefits.

Benefits of Using the Cloud for Design

While means of transferring files have improved over the years, evolving from floppy disks to flash drives to email, the cloud removes the need for physical drives to hold files. Ever been working on a design for a client and lose everything due to hardware failure or your operating system randomly freezing before you got the chance to save? Working directly from the cloud will almost always prevent the frustration associated with this, as many will save your files automatically in the cloud. It’s easy to revert back to the timestamp where you left off.

Another major benefit is the simplification of working remotely from your client. Rather than having to coordinate sending files back and forth via email and arranging meetings to discuss the work, you can simply save your work into a shared cloud storage folder and your client or boss can easily access the files at a time convenient to them.

Here are some cloud storage services already popular in the design community:

Dropbox
Many have discovered the reality of Dropbox’s slogan, “Simplify your life,” as it is probably the most popular cloud storage application. An incredibly user-friendly app, Dropbox is free to sign up and also offers professional and business plans. The free plan allots you 2GB of storage, which can be increased through a referral system. This is a great way to jump from computer to computer and access your documents whenever you need them, without having to worry about carrying a flash drive around.

Dropbox

Basecamp
Basecamp is the leading project management app. It’s great for designers, because it holds and organizes all the files of a project in one place: including discussion feeds, files and documents, which can be shared and worked on by team members from anywhere. You no longer have to worry about your computer or software crashing and losing your work or trying to email files to your team that are too large to attach. The security, organization and collaboration features of this app make it well worth its small fee.

Basecamp

Adobe Creative Cloud
This is perhaps the most exciting cloud app for designers. No more paying huge sums to install software on your computer and then having to pay more to upgrade a few months later. Membership to Creative Cloud enables you to use the latest Adobe products, like CS6, as well as design print, apps and video. You can sync your files from any device and share them with a team or work individually, as well as obtain exclusive features.

Adobe Creative Cloud

Downside

The only real drawback of the cloud is its reliance on internet connection. If you don’t have access to the internet, you don’t have access to the cloud. This can be especially problematic if you have internet connectivity issues or you’re dealing with bandwidth killers on your connection. It might be a good idea to continue to back up your files for such a situation, but if you take care of any internet problems and have a reliable source, the cloud is sure to make your design work much easier.

5 Light and Free Image Editors

While Photoshop, Fireworks, and Illustrator may be the most feature-rich and popular options for web and graphic designers, sometimes there may be situations where a lighter option would be preferred. Opening Photoshop for very simple image edits isn’t always the most efficient option. I have searched and reviewed these 5 image editors that are easily available for download. These software are light, fast, really easy to use, and have all the necessary image editing tools required for simple jobs.

Now I do not disagree that Photoshop, Illustrator, and Fireworks are the life blood of the  industry. But having said that, all these software are also complicated for some users, strains the CPU, have really large sizes, and most importantly carry a price tag. So if you are a small time user who wants to perform relatively simple edits to images, you would certainly hesitate in shelling out for such software. And that’s quite understandable.

After all, why would someone pay hundreds of dollars for Photoshop if he/she just has to change the color contrasts or lighting of an image?

Also the number of available free image editing software is also quite large. So large that it may confuse you beyond measure. In an effort to work around this confusion we present yo 5 free image editing software that are light, fast, easy to use, and gets the job done.

1. FastStone Image Viewer

FastStone

This software meets all the criteria that we have set for it. It is light (only 5.13 MB), fast, free, and have loads of important features. The most striking amongst them is its ‘full screen’. When you go full screen and move your mouse to the edges of the screen, different types of tool menus will drop down.

The available features include Clone stamp, different types of lighting adjustment, a screen capture tool, conversion to grayscale, sepia, and negative colors, red-eye removal, an image comparing facility, a great image viewer, a versatile slideshow feature, and some other significant smaller features. In addition, this software has an astonishing amount of tools and controls to retouch the color of an image.

Now when I list down the features like that, it may seem very long, but when you compare it to Photoshop and other such software, it lags behind by miles in a number of features. But the comparison with Photoshop is unfair. This software is only 5.3 MB and when compared to size of size of Photoshop, which is in GBs. It’s beyond belief to see so many features packed in so less a size. This software has an easy user interface, is light weight, and works fast making it the best software for performing simple edits.

2. PhotoScape

PhotoScape

PhotoScape is another free image editing software that is steadily gaining popularity among professional photographers and designers. It has a great feature of converting digital camera image formats like RAW into PNG, JPEG and other main stream image formats. Just like FastStone, it is also a great image viewer and has the standard image editing features such as clone stamp, crop tool, lighting adjustment tool, and color adjustment tools. However the most important features of PhotoScape are batch editing functionality, a color picker tool, and file rename tool. It’s a little bulkier than FastStone, around 20 MB (still way too lighter than Photoshop), but the number of features are comparable to its size.

3. IrfanView

IrfanView

First launched in 1996, IrfanView has now become a widely accepted choice of an image viewer by many photographers and designers. It is really small (1.6 MB), fast, compact, and really easy to use. IrfanView is one of the best options to view PSD files without opening up Photoshop, which takes lots of time to open. Thus it’s a very useful tool in watching the contents of multiple PSD files at a glance. It is also a good image editor with powerful and efficient conversion tools that can convert multiple files at once. It’s a great tool for embedding a watermark, cutting, cropping, effects like sharpen and blur, and metadata editing.

4. Inkscape

Inkscape

Inkscape is an open source freeware that could be used to create and edit vector graphic files. It is the best free option to create and edit SVG files and have features that are comparable to bulkier and paid software such as Adobe Illustrator and Freehand. Its size is only 34 MB and the image sizes it creates are highly optimized to facilitate usage in web. Inkscape is small, fast and light. It uses an open source vector graphic format known as SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) and is already a choice of web-designers for creating vector images. Its number of features is not comparable to illustrator, but it has some features that illustrator doesn’t have; such as direct editing of SVG sources, one click paint bucket fill, and direct painting of objects.

5. GIMP

GIMP

GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is your all inclusive, free solution to all types of basic image editing needs. It’s free, fast, small (only 77 MB), and has so many tools that will make a graphic designer forget Photoshop. While that might be an intended exaggeration but atleast dramatically reduce his/her dependency on it. For all other non-graphic designers, it is a complete image editor with all the most used tools of Photoshop and could be used to perform varieties of edits to all types of raster image formats. And the best part is that its open source, thus free for use.

Review of the Best Font Managers for Your Own Usage

I’m sure you have already found a way to optimize your work with fonts, and that you are absolutely happy with your font management app. But wait a minute, why you are reading this post if that is the case?

Just let me guess…you want to compare your solution with other apps or, maybe, like many designers you’re still working without a font management app and cluttered drop down lists of fonts are your reality. Oh man, you should fix it!

Windows users, have you noticed that every new version of Windows brings hundreds of standard fonts. Here are some stats:

  • Windows XP: 133
  • Windows Vista: 191
  • Windows 7: 235
  • Windows 8: 400 +

You don’t even use all of these fonts. Working with huge font lists is terrible.

Everyday we noticed that 24 hours is not enough time in the day. We need more extra time to work, to rest, to spend with our family and loved ones. That’s why we are trying to optimize our working process. Without an effective font management system you are wasting your precious time.

There are a huge number of font management apps, and I’ve tried a lot of them. So, let’s start talking about their pros and cons.

Nexus Font 2.5

Nexus Font 2.5

License: free
OS: Windows XP-Windows 8

This is a totally awesome free application with simple and intuitive interface. Nexus Font 2.5 is the fastest font management program. With Windows 8 this app shows the best result in speed. It doesn’t have an automatic scanning of libraries and fonts, that’s why it runs in seconds. Also this app allows you to not slow down your system by keeping hundreds of fonts installed to it. I like how comfortable this manager is to work in. Font organizing, the searching process and font previews are great!
More features: font auto activation, backing up the font libraries, work offline, font tables.

Suitcase Fusion 4

Suitcase Fusion 4

Suitcase is a super font manager for creative persons, but still it is a very professional app. It allows you to compare fonts side-by-side. Also this font storage has some plugins for work with Adobe Creative Suite 5-6 QuarkXPress (for font auto activation).

Suitcase Fusion 4 makes your life much easier. You can organize your fonts in sets, cool previews and searches will save your time. More features: web font is enabled (WebINK and Google Web Font connections), you can detect and repair bad fonts (FontDoctor ) and find similar fonts (QuickMatch). There is a full-trial-version for 30 days. Just try it :)

MainType 5

MainType 5

OS: Windows 2000 — Windows 8

Main Type 5 is designed especially for graphic artists and typographers, because this font preview application provides all the features they need: advanced categorizing, searching capabilities, different plugins. You may easily detect invalid and corrupt fonts, work with all popular font formats (TrueType, OpenType, TrueType Collections, Postscript Type 1 fonts)

FontExplorer X

FontExplorer X

This application performs functions of all above applications, and a version for Mac in many ways surpasses them. FontExplorer functionality for Windows and for Mac are very different. Mac-version is steeper. There is a full-Trial-version for 30 days.

FontCase

FontCase

Tools of the Trade for Web Designers

One complaint I hear over and over again from designers is that no matter how hard they push through the day, there just never seems to be enough time to get through everything they’d expected to. I’ve heard it often enough that I’ve done some digging to identify the problem. Sure, we could all be a bunch of lazy lay-abouts, but I think we all know that’s not true. So what’s to blame for productivity that’s not quite up to snuff?

The best I can figure is that we’re all suffering from a condition that I’ve dubbed “Old Guard Syndrome.” That is, we’re stuck in a rut. We aren’t taking advantage of changing technologies as quickly as software and online tools are updating what they’re capable of doing for us. We need to adapt faster if we’re going to stay organized and become more efficient. Following are some online tools that can help you streamline your workload and make each minute of your day count for just a bit more.

Balsamiq

Balsamiq

One of the surest ways to lose time on a project is to waste time on apps and ideas that you realize down the road aren’t necessary or even usable. In order to prevent that kind of time wastage, it’s important to have a good idea of the route you’re taking before you begin, which means you’ll need a prototype.

Balsamiq is an online tool that allows users to build a mockup of their website. It has an intuitive interface that lets users drag and drop elements in order to quickly create a digital “sketch” of their project. At the end, you’ll have a mockup of your project and a roadmap that highlights exactly the steps you’ll need to take in order to be successful with your project.

Napkee

Napkee

A companion to Balsamiq, Napkee allows users to export their Balsamiq mockups to HTML/CSS/JS and Adobe Flex 3 in one easy step. Tthat functionality is missing from Balsamiq. When you make changes to your mockup, the changes will instantly be seen in your Napkee file, which means you don’t have to do any coding at all.

Moqups

Moqups

Another great wireframe tool is Moqups. It’s a free HTML5 app that is intuitive, easy to use, and allows for prototypes that are easy to share. It offers the same drag and drop ease of Balsamiq.  While it lacks some of the functionality of more complicated wireframe apps, its ease-of-use makes this a great option for anyone who only wants to spend a few minutes working on a mockup.

Espresso

Espresso

When it’s time to move into coding, it’s important to streamline that experience as much as possible. That means, finding a text editor that suits your personal style of coding. A great option that is available for Mac users is Espresso. Overall, it’s simple, yet functional, software that doesn’t get bogged down in too many complex extras. Its CSS tools, ability to override live code on a site, and X-ray function which visualizes and inspects your layout make it a superb choice of editor for any designer who needs to hustle through a project and get it right the first time.

Coda

Coda

Another option for editing is Coda, which, like Espresso, has a fairly straightforward interface. Its built in snippets tool and syntax highlighting modes make it a great means for building up a library of code that you’ve written and might want to reuse on future projects. Coupled with Snippets, it’s an amazing way for any coder to quickly amass a toolkit of code.

iA Writer

iA Writer

As web designers, we not only have to know how to code and wireframe and all of that good technical stuff, we also need to have a handle on writing. It’s not always our favorite task, so a text editor that is simple and clean like iA Writer can be a better option than clunkier word processing software.  In fact, the interface is so simple that you won’t be distracted from what’s important, your words on the page.

Xero

Xero

Finally, it’s imperative to handle the money end of things as efficiently as possible. After all, if you’re worried about whether or not you invoiced correctly, or spending half of your day trying to get your clients to pay you, you won’t be able to focus on your design projects to your full ability. Xero is accounting software the helps small businesses keep an eye on the financial side of the business. The online tools make it easy to manage your business from anywhere. Its intuitive interface means you won’t have to waste a lot of time learning a whole new set of software. In addition, they offer free resources such as a small business invoicing guide that will help you wrap your mind around some of the business aspects of being a web designer.

Leading Options for Creating Restaurant Websites

The restaurant industry is notorious for having bad websites. With so many restaurants out there in need of a website, many solutions have been launched specifically to target restaurants. While a restaurant website can be build without the use of one of these platforms, some of the newer options include features that can be useful and even essential for restaurants.

In this post we’ll look at some of the platforms and content management systems that exist specifically for restaurants. As an alternative, there are HTML templates and themes for many CMSs that could be purchased, and a custom design is always an option as well.

Restaurant Engine

Restaurant Engine used the extremely popular WordPress content management system. They host your website and you choose from their available templates. Each site comes with features like an online menu, online reservations, an events calendar, social media integration, photo and video galleries, and more. The templates use a responsive layout, so your site will be ready for users on mobile phones and tablets. Pricing starts at $39 per month with a 14-day free trial available.

Restaurant Engine

Happy Tables

Happy Tables uses a very customized version of WordPress to power the websites, and many of the features are similar to Restaurant Engine. You’ll choose from their selection of templates, and hosting is included. You can create your menu, add photos, accept reservations and online orders, integrate with social media, and more. All websites on Happy Tables are also optimized for mobile users. The price is $39 per month, and a free plan is also available.

Happy Tables

Pocket Diner

Pocket Diner focuses on mobile websites for those who already have a primary desktop version. Pocket Diner mobiles sites have an app-like look and feel. Features include automatic smartphone detection, a CMS that allows for management of menus and other content, custom branding, statistics, social media integration, and more. Pocket Diner also integrates with Livebookings online reservation software so you can take reservations from customers who are on the go. Pricing starts at $29 per month and goes up from there depending on the number of locations.

Webvanta Restaurant Solutions

The Webvanta CMS has a solution specifically created for restaurants. Features include hosting, online menu management, blogs, photo management, online ordering, specials and events, optimization for mobile users, social media integration, and more. With their system you can use a pre-made template or pay more for a custom design. Pricing includes a $299 setup fee if you’re using a template, and $49 monthly (online ordering is additional). Full custom designs start at $2,999.

Webvanta Restaurant Solutions

RestaurantConnect!

RestaurantConnect! offers many of the features of the options listed above, but they also offer design customization for their customers. In addition, email marketing is included. You can create custom newsletters to match the design of your site, and set up drip campaigns and send email blasts. As a result of these extra features, the pricing starts at $89 per month.

Other Options for Restaurant Websites:

The options listed above are only the start. I won’t go into details on all of the options because the features and details of most are rather similar, but if you are looking for a solution for your own restaurant website you can check out these options.
