Step 1 – Creating a new file

First create a new layer with w:2560px and h:1600px with color:000000 (black), name this layer as “Background”.

Step 2 – Place the image of bird

Open the image of bird and place in your document. Place the image in the middle of the document. Name this layer “Eagle”.

Colored Eagle Manipulation in Photoshop

Step 3 – Preparing to the main effect

Create a new folder below the eagle image and name this folder “Lights effects”. We’ll create the main effect of this tutorial. Now choose brush tool (press b) with a soft round brush color e20000 and 1000px size paint in the middle of your document and use hard light to blend mode. Create a new layer below this layer and again use a soft round brush but now with 500px size and use color white. See the images below.

Step 5 – Creating circular shapes

We need more effects. Let’s create some circular shapes using the brush tool (b). Use a hard round brush with different sizes and colors to do this. After creating the circle press ctrl and click on the circle with the layer to create a circular selection. In a separate layer add a stroke (Edit >Stroke) with a lighter color and 4px or 5px. Return to the first circle shape and add a Filter>Blur>Gaussian blur, with 7px or 8px. Now, in the stroke layer add the same effect but now with 3px or 4px blur. Then marge both layers together. I created more circles and erased some areas. Look the images below.

Step 6 – Using liquify filter

Still in the lights effects folder create a new layer and use a yellow brush (b) then apply Filter>Liquify, and use forward warp tool to create a distorted shape like images bellow.

Step 7 – Adding more stock

Now I used a image of stock to add more lights effects (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=mmmm6fkg). Resize the image and change the layer mode to screen. Mask or erase some areas if necessary.

Step 8 – Creating splatter effect

Create a new layer above the eagle image then use any splatter brush to create this splatter effect. With your splatter brush paint over the eagle image, then press ctrl+click in this splatter layer to load a selection. Go to eagle image and press ctrl+c to cut and ctrl+v to paste this selection in a new layer. Now you can delete the original splatter layer, we do not need this layer.

Step 9 – Creating circular line shape

Create another layer above the eagle image. I created a circular line shape to do this simple effect. You can download this pack containing the shapes here (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=73gm7gs1). Now, just draw a shape like the image below. I use color #ff006c with overlay mode and 15% opacity.

Step 10 – Creating abstracts shapes

Create another layer above lights effects folder. Time to create some abstracts shapes. In this step I used some renders stock then I simply use liquify tool to distort the renders (Filter>Liquify>Forward warp tool). I don’t remember where I found the stock renders, but you can easily find these stock in Devianart. See below how were the renders after liquify tool. Use hue saturation (ctrl+u) to adjust the colors if necessary and burn tool (o) to darken the colors.

Step 11 – Apply a light effect on the wings

Now I create another layer above the eagle image. I will apply a light effect on the wings. To do this i draw i line with pen tool (p) and apply a layer style as you can see below, use outer glow with color #ab023a and let others settings standard. Then to finish the effect i apply a Filter>Blur>Motion blur, angle 0 and 10px or 15 px. See image below as reference. Do the same in the other wing.

Colored Eagle Manipulation in Photoshop

Colored Eagle Manipulation in Photoshop

Step 12 – Creating more lines

Create another layer and use pen tool (p) again to create more lines, but this time without layer style applied. Just use white color and choose simulate pressure. Choose a hard round brush 2px then press (p), right click select simulate pressure and hit OK.

Colored Eagle Manipulation in Photoshop

Step 13 – Creating pink circles

I create in a new layer more pink circles and then I apply a Gaussian blur effect (Filter>Blur>Gaussian blur) with 5px. Then I have grouped all this circles together. Use soft light to layer mode and reduce the opacity to 20% or 15%. See the image below again.

Colored Eagle Manipulation in Photoshop

Step 14 – Adding typography

I just use Illustrator to create a simple typography. Use type tool in Illustrator and add Effect>3d>Extrude & bevel and use the standard settings as you can see below.

Colored Eagle Manipulation in Photoshop

Colored Eagle Manipulation in Photoshop

Step 15 – Last step – Adding additional effects

For the last step feel free to create additional shapes and effects. I just paint some blue small dots with brush tool (b) and also I create some triangular shapes and I put diagonal lines to finish this job.

Thats all folks, hope you all enjoy it.

Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Hello guys, this is my second tutorial and I hope you will enjoy it as much as the first one. In this tutorial you will learn different photomanipulation techniques such as how to implement stock photos in your picture, how to combine them together to create a surreal image and how to use the 3D tool of Photoshop to give your piece a better look.

Note: This Tutorial is more for the advanced Artists, so if you are a beginner you should practice until you feel comfortable with photoshop and its tools. I used a graphic tablet in this tutorial, but it's not necessarily needed to recreate all the effects.

Stocks Used:

Step 1 - Creating the Background

Create a new document in Photoshop: 1081 pixels width and 840 pixels high at 72 dpi. Pick "White" at the "Background Contents".

1 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Now create a new folder and name it "Background". Add a new layer and get out the brush tool (B). Pick the color #a1a1a1, set the brush size to 500px (soft brush) and the Opacity to 20%. Now choose a little area where you want to place your stock later and brush around it. Make the edges darker and get more and more lighter the closer you come to your "area".

1 2 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Open the "cracked earth" texture and place it into your picture, name the layer "Ground". Now choose the move tool (V), press Ctrl + T and resize your texture.

1 3 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Click on Edit - Transform - Perspective and deform the texture as I did, be sure that there is a check mark in "Show Transform Controls".

1 4 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Set the opacity of the layer down to 55% and set the blending mode to "Linear Burn". Add a "layer mask" to the texture by clicking on the little box with the white dot in the middle and start brushing around the edges of the texture with a black, 100px sized soft brush (don't forget to set the opacity back to 100%).

1 5 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

The texture doesn't really fit well into the background, so add the following adjustments as clipping masks to the "Ground" layer.

-Gradient Map b/w:

1 6 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

-Curves:

1 8 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

1 9 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

1 10 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Now you're done and we can start with the second and probably longest part of the tutorial.

Step 2 - Bring the Surrealism into your piece

Create a new folder and name it "Manipulation" then open your model stock and start to render it with the pen tool (p), but only cut out the upper part of the body, you don't need her feet. Name the layer "Woman" and go to Filter => Liquify. Zoom into the picture and press (W) for the Forward Warp tool. In the left side of the window you will see the "Tool Options", here you set the Brush Size between 5 an 15 (you will always need different sizes) and start to transform the lower part of her body. Try to make it look like her body is melting. This part will maybe hard if you do it for the first time, so don't worry if it doesn't look perfect on the first try, just do it again and again until you think it is.

Note: If you have a Graphic tablet it will be much easier then using a mouse!

3 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

3 2 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Add the following Curves as a clipping mask to the "Woman" layer:

3 3 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

3 4 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

3 5 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

3 6 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Create a new layer under the "Woman" and name it "Liquid". Choose a nice "skin color" (mine is #f3e0cd) and create a round shape which you put behind the body. Then go again to Filter => Liquify and repeat the things you did with her body.

3 7 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Now get out your "Burn Tool" (O) and start to add shadows to the liquid. Use a small brush (5-10px) and set the range to "Midtones". The Exposure should always be like 20 or 50%, so you can darken the parts better.

3 8 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Add a new layer above the woman and name it "Energy Lines". Pick black as your foreground color and choose a 1px sized, hard brush. Now get out the pen tool (P) and draw two small lines on her back as I did, but leave space between those lines, we will need it later! After that: Right Click => Stroke Path (Tool: Brush), then again right click but this time pick "Delete Path".

*Note: If you can only pick "Stroke Subpath" then just hold down the CTRL button and left click anywhere on your picture. After that you should have no problems.

Now that you have your lines, get out the eraser tool (E) (opacity: 20%, soft small brush (1-5px)) and erase little parts of those (mostly the "beginning" and the "ending"of the lines) then set the Opacity of the layer to 65%.

3 9 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

3 10 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

3 11 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Right click on the "Energy Lines" layer => Blending Options. Use the following settings:

3 12 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Now add some small dots with a hard, round brush in the middle of the lines and use the following Blending Options:

3 13 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

3 14 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

3 15 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Create a new layer above the dots and pick #f2c05a as your foreground color. Now choose your brush tool (B) and use a small sized, round soft brush to create little "light dots" over the normal dots. Set this layer to lighten.

3 16 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Repeat the steps with the "Energy Lines" and the "Dots" (but set the light dots this time on "Color Burn") and place them somewhere else on her body.

3 17 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Open the Tree Stock and paste it into your piece. Erase the tree crown with a soft brush and place the layer between the "woman" and "Liquid".

3 18 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Now: Edit => Puppet Warp. Transform the upper part of the tree, so that it blends with the body.

3 19 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Create a new layer (as a clipping mask) above the tree and pick a 5px sized, round, soft brush. Choose a dark brown color (mine: #4e391b) and start to draw lines in some of the darker parts of the wood.

3 20 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Set the layer on multiply 50%. Now add the following blending options:

3 21 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

3 22 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

3 23 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

3 24 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

3 25 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Now do the same with white on lighter areas of the tree on a new layer. Set the opacity to 30%.

3 26 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

3 27 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Copy your tree layer and name it "Tree Shadow". Now transform it as it did:

3 28 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Now go to Filter => Blur => Gaussian Blur 5,0px. Set the layer-opacity to 30%. Erase parts of the shadows with a soft brush which are "over" the ground.

3 29 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Add a few more shadows by brushing with a soft, round, black brush on the "Tree Shadow" layer.

3 30 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Open the second tree stock, cut it out and erase everything except the tree crown (Hint: If you have simple pictures with a white background just use the Magic Wand Tool (W), its much easier then drawing those paths with the pen tool). Now paste the tree crown layer two times into your piece. The first you put behind the "Tree" layer and the second you put under the "Woman" layer.

3 31 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Okay, now we'll add some little shadows to the tree crowns. We start with the one behind the tree: So create a new layer and name it "Tree Crown Shadows 1", then brush with a small sized, soft, round, black brush shadows in the leaves (if the shadows are too strong just lower the opacity of the layer until it fits well). After that do the same with the other tree crown layer and the tree layer.

3 32 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Add the following Curves as clipping masks to both of the "Tree Crown" layers:

3 33 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

3 34 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

3 35 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

3 36 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

3 37 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Open the leaves stock and pick two nice leaves, paste them into your picture and transform them. Now create a copy of every leaf layer and move the copies a little away from the original ones, then create a clipping mask to every copied leaf layer and fill the clipping masks with black. After that merge them together and go to Filter => Blur => Gaussian Blur 2px. Set the opacity of the layers to 80%.

3 38 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

3 39 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Now get out the smoke and cloud brushes and start to brush over and behind the tree. As you may notice the tree does not really look like it's standing on the ground, so I decided to put some clouds over it. If the smoke or clouds don't look good just use the Puppet Warp and transform them.

3 40 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Open the 3rd tree stock and pick one of the trees. Now put it over the right arm of the model and erase parts of it, so that it looks like it's coming out of her. After that create a new layer above the tree layer and brush a very light cloud over it (just reduce the opacity to about 20% if its too strong).

3 41 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Get out the vine stock 1 and put it over the left arm of your model. Erase some parts of the vine so that it looks like it is entangling her whole arm. After that add the following curves as a clipping mask to the vine:

3 42 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

3 43 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

3 44 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

3 45 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Copy the vine layer, create a clipping mask to the copied layer and fill it with black. Merge the clipping mask and the layer and go to Filter => Blur => Gaussian Blur 2px. Name the layer "vine shadow" and put it under the vine layer, now set down the opacity to 20% and erase parts which are not on her body, otherwise the shadows would be on the background which would look unrealistic.

3 46 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Open the Moss Stock and pick your Magic Wand Tool (W). Set the Tolerance to 100 and start picking the area where the moss is (hold down shift to pick more then just one selection).

3 47 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Cut out your selection and paste it into your picture. Resize the moss and place it on the upper part of her back. Now zoom in the picture (about 300 - 500%) and get out your eraser. Use a 3 to 5px sized, soft brush to erase parts of the moss and set the opacity down to 70%.

3 48 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

3 49 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Use the following curves as a clipping mask over the moss layer:

3 50 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

3 51 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

3 52 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

3 53 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Open the engine stock and cut out one of the 3 turbines. Resize it and paste it in the area which we left free between the two "energy lines".

3 54 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

3 55 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Now use the following Hue/Saturation adjustment as a clipping mask on the turbine:

3 56 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

3 57 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Create a new clipping mask over the Hue/Saturation layer and start brushing with a 8 - 10 px sized, black, soft brush inner shadows to the turbine. Set the opacity of the shadow layer to 70%.

3 58 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Open the moss stock again and paste it this time over the turbine, erase the most part of it and leave just a little bit on the sides of the turbine. Set the opacity to 80 - 90%.

3 59 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Use the following curves adjustment as a clipping mask over the turbine moos:

3 60 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

3 61 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

3 62 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

3 63 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

3 64 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Create another clipping mask and add shadows to the moss.

3 65 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Pick your pen tool (P) and create two triangle shapes, a big and a small one. For the first you should use a color which is a little darker then the skin of your model (mine was: #e3b48b), for the second, just use black and set the opacity to 20%. Now paste the shapes on the left arm of your model, first the big one then the smaller one.

3 66 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Open the roots stock and cut out some good looking roots. After that paste them into your piece, resize and put them over the second triangle. Use the puppet warp to transform them into the right position and your eraser tool to erase bad looking parts. After that, add shadows to the roots like we did with the vines.

3 67 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

3 68 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

3 69 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Use the following curves adjustment as a clipping mask over the roots:

3 70 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

3 71 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

3 72 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

3 73 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Create another triangle shape which is as big as the first, but use this time the skin color of your model (mine: #fbf1e9) and put it over the roots. Move it a little so that the other shapes are visible.

3 74 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Now repeat the whole Step again for the right arm, but use this time different shapes and other roots.

3 75 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Now it's time to add some little details to the picture. We will start with some birds for the little tree on her right arm. I used one of Gomedia's premium packs, where you can find these birds. Paste them around the tree.

3 76 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Open the vine stock 2 and pick the vine4.png. Resize the vine and place it over the turbine, after that add the following blending options to the layer.

3 77 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

3 78 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Open the waterfall stock, press (L) to get out the Lasso Tool and then draw a selection around the waterfall.

3 79 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Now go to Select -> Modify -> Feather and set the Radius to 50 pixels then right click on the image -> Layer via cut. Copy the waterfall layer and paste it in your artwork. Resize the waterfall and copy it. Move the first waterfall under the turbine and set it on lighter color 100%. Now move the second waterfall over it, set this layer on darken 60%.

3 80 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Open the butterfly 1 stock, resize the image and put the butterfly over the turbine. Set the opacity down to 80% and add the following Hue/Saturation adjustment as a clipping mask to the butterfly layer.

Now move your letter to anywhere in the piece where it looks good and if you have problems with the quality of the letter just go to Window => 3D => 3D {SCENE} => Quality: Ray Traced Final.

3 93 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Repeat that step one or two times again and if you want you can also add different shapes like circles, triangles, lines or whatever looks good.

3 94 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Open the rose petals stock. Before you start rendering them add the following hue/saturation adjustment to change their color to green:

3 95 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Now that they are green, cut them out and place them all over your piece. Try to make it look like they float around her.

3 96 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Create a new layer above all leaves and pick a hard, white, round brush (the size should be a little bigger then your leaves) and draw a circle over 3 or 4 of them. After that grab your eraser and pick a round, soft brush which should be a little smaller then your white circle. Now start to erase in the middle of the circle until you have something that is similar to mine.

3 97 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

3 98 Create “Bring Me To Life” Photo Manipulation Scene

Step 3 - Final Step

Open the texture pack and pick crazykira05. Now paste it in your piece and duplicate it several times so that it'll fill your image. Set the texture on color dodge 100%.

Stocks Used:

1.Step

Start with the document of size of 3000 x 2250 and make a new layer and fill it with the gradient of color
0290c7 to 06b3f5 to 0695ca.

1 Create A Stylish Dancer Photo Manipulation

2 Create A Stylish Dancer Photo Manipulation

2.Step

Next I add paper texture to the new layer. I desaturate then it and resize to fit the document and reduce the opacity to “28%” and blending mode to “Multiply” and erase some of the parts. You can find different types of textures on the net and also you can download this texture from the resource pack posted on this tutorial.

3 Create A Stylish Dancer Photo Manipulation

3.Step

Next make a new layer and take a large Soft edge brush of size and "800-1000px" reduce the flow to 5-7% and start brushing on the corners of the document and change the blending mode to “Soft light“.

4 Create A Stylish Dancer Photo Manipulation

4.Step

Then add a new Adjustment layer of color filter layer of “Cooling filter(82)”. Opacity reduce to “60%“.

5 Create A Stylish Dancer Photo Manipulation

5.Step

Its time to place our model or you can choose any picture of your choice. For cutout I generally use Pen tool, simply place points around the model and then Right-click and select Make selection with 0/1 radius. You can find different techniques, just Google it.

6 Create A Stylish Dancer Photo Manipulation

6.Step

Duplicate the image and flip vertical and place at the bottom to add shadow effect and reduce the opacity, see image below:

7 Create A Stylish Dancer Photo Manipulation

8 Create A Stylish Dancer Photo Manipulation

7.Step

Lets add more shadow to the image, make a new layer above model shadow layer and take a Soft edge brush of “20px” and follow,to 5-10% and start brushing around its shoes.

My result after placing all the abstracts is look like this:

32 Create A Stylish Dancer Photo Manipulation

18.Step

Next I add more depth to the image. Create a new layer below the abstracts layers and select Elliptical marquee tool and make a circle by holding shift key and fill it with black color.

33 Create A Stylish Dancer Photo Manipulation

Drag this circle behind the model’s head, see image below:

34 Create A Stylish Dancer Photo Manipulation

19.Step

Again make a new layer and this time we are going to make triangles with the help of Polygon tool (U). You have to enter the sides for the polygon ex. 3 for triangle, 4 for square…..etc.

35 Create A Stylish Dancer Photo Manipulation

36 Create A Stylish Dancer Photo Manipulation

After selecting the Polygon tool make sure that “paths” tab is selected see above picture and after drawing the path (I mean to say triangle), right–click and select fill path and fill with bright yellow. Finally select Pen tool and right–click and delete path.

37 Create A Stylish Dancer Photo Manipulation

20.Step

Next I made different sizes of triangles and place them over big black circle, look the image below for reference. Similarly I repeated these step once for another group of circle and triangles but this slightly smaller near his foot. You can do one thing also select the triangles and circle layers duplicate them resize it and place it.

Create Futuristic Berserker Scene using 3D Techniques

Today we have one very complex and pretty hard tutorial. In this tutorial (I cant say Photoshop, because we will use not only this software) you will learn how to create futuristic Berserker scene. You know that you cant become a professional designer if you will use only one program, like Photoshop. You need learn more software and combine all in one project and this tutorial is great example for it, because to create this effect we will use 4 programs. You will learn various 3D techniques in combination of the following programs: Poser8, Autodesk 3Ds Max, Cinema4D and Photoshop.

Final Image Preview

Create Futuristic Berserker Scene in Photoshop

1.Step

So we will star not with Photoshop, but with Poser. Open Poser and delete the default setings (Figure -> Delete figure).

Create Futuristic Berserker Scene in Photoshop

Now create model that we will use in this effect. We will use standart model, therefore hit the Bookstores and choose: Poser6/Jessi.

Create Futuristic Berserker Scene in Photoshop

Export this model using option Export -> 3d Studio.

Create Futuristic Berserker Scene in Photoshop

Remember to export in groups, and also add options you can see below.

Create Futuristic Berserker Scene in Photoshop

2.Step

Import our figure in 3Ds Max.

Create Futuristic Berserker Scene in Photoshop

At first choose most suitable view for you (publishers of view). And also delete the object selector of the knees down.

Create Futuristic Berserker Scene in Photoshop

Now we will start to modify object. Open the material editor or simply press the "M" and put the following values:
Ambient: Red: 150 Green.150 Blue: 150 Hue: 0 Sat: 0 Value: 150
Diffuse: Red: 150 Green.150 Blue: 150 Hue: 0 Sat: 0 Value: 150

We add large output size: 3000x3000, and keep it as .Png, rgb, 42bits. Remember to activate the alpha channel.

3.Step

Now we will start work with Photoshop. Create a new document 750x1080, 300 resolution and 8 bits, rgb color.

Create Futuristic Berserker Scene in Photoshop

4.Step

Create a new layer, fill with black color, add Gradient - Overlay; colors #9b9b9b and #ffffff.

Create Futuristic Berserker Scene in Photoshop

5.Step

We will put several layers of textures, lights, shadows and gradient maps to create mysterious gray background. How much layers you will need, depends on the perspective you wants to give for work.

5.1 Texture: Layer Mode: Luminosity, Opacity: 20% + mask layer
5.2 Clouds: Layer Mode: Overlay, Opacity: 10% + mask layer
5.3 Clouds: Layer Mode: Overlay, Opacity: 22% + mask layer
5.4 Black: Layer Mode: Soft Light, Opacity: 74% + mask layer
5.5 Black: Layer Mode: Normal, Opacity: 11%
5.6 Black: Layer Mode: Soft Light, Opacity: 38%
5.7 Black and White: Layer Mode: Soft Light, Opacity: 13%
5.8 Gradient Map: Layer Mode: Hard Light, Opacity: 71%

Be very careful and create layers and modifications similar likw on image below.

7.Step

Now add object that we created in 3Ds Max and Poser. Add a Gradient map inverted Black and White.

Create Futuristic Berserker Scene in Photoshop

Create Futuristic Berserker Scene in Photoshop

8.Step

Add little bit of light effects. For that you can use soft brush with azure color and play with layer options. Add lights using image below as reference.

Create Futuristic Berserker Scene in Photoshop

9.Step

Lets start to add abstract forms to our work. In this case I'm reusing an old render, you can use the one that best suits you.

Create Futuristic Berserker Scene in Photoshop

Create Futuristic Berserker Scene in Photoshop

When your abstract form is ready, edit it using the Layer masks, Gradients maps. You can modify it as you want, it become personal taste. You can see my example below.

Create Futuristic Berserker Scene in Photoshop

10.Step

For this work we need more abstract objects and this time we want create 3D objects, therefore we will use Cinema4D. Open Cinema4D and create a sphere (Object -> Primitive -> Sphere).

Create Futuristic Berserker Scene in Photoshop

11.Step

Create a new material (File -> New material) and edit the color brightness up to 111 and a color (255,255,255).

Create Futuristic Berserker Scene in Photoshop

Create Futuristic Berserker Scene in Photoshop

12.Step

Now we will scoff with this object. We will deform it. Begin with the application of deformation (Object -> Deformations). Use a "Bend" and a "Wind" functions.

Create Futuristic Berserker Scene in Photoshop

Create Futuristic Berserker Scene in Photoshop

13.Step

Add a hypernurbs (Object -> Nurbs -> Hypernurbs).

Create Futuristic Berserker Scene in Photoshop

14.Step

Now copy and paste the items as many times as you want and add lighting, in my case I add more as I wanted a lot of intensity, but this depends on what effect you want. To render these elements bring it into a high resolution as .Psd and the channel alpha activated.

Create Futuristic Berserker Scene in Photoshop

15.Step

Add our new abstract beans to our work in Photoshop. Edit them: transform, change sizes, positions and delete some parts using layer masks etc. You can use image below as reference.

Create Futuristic Berserker Scene in Photoshop

16.Step - Creation of 3D Bubbles

And again we will use Cinema4D. So, open it and create three spheres.

Create Futuristic Berserker Scene in Photoshop

Create a material "Danel" (File -> Shader -> Danel).

Create Futuristic Berserker Scene in Photoshop

And edit material using images below as references.

Create Futuristic Berserker Scene in Photoshop

Create Futuristic Berserker Scene in Photoshop

Create Futuristic Berserker Scene in Photoshop

Create Futuristic Berserker Scene in Photoshop

Create Futuristic Berserker Scene in Photoshop

Join our fields with a metball (Object -> Modeling -> Metball).

Create Futuristic Berserker Scene in Photoshop

Create a sky (Sky -> Object -> Scene). This will help us with the colors. To render these elements bring it into a high resolution as .Psd with alpha channel enabled.

Create Futuristic Berserker Scene in Photoshop

17.Step

Add 3D Bubbles in Photoshop.

Create Futuristic Berserker Scene in Photoshop

18.Step

With the technique I use in 9.step, add more renders. Quantity depends on you.

Create Futuristic Berserker Scene in Photoshop

19.Step - Cone Creation

Come back to Cinema4D (last time, I promise) and create a cone (Object -> Primitive -> Cone).

Create Futuristic Berserker Scene in Photoshop

Start to edit our cone. For this go to the tab Order and put the Top segments: 5.

Create Futuristic Berserker Scene in Photoshop

After that you can edit cone using the Selection Cyclical, but this depends on how you edit your figure.

Create Futuristic Berserker Scene in Photoshop

Add texture to materials that you like and add a sky (you already know how to do it). And export it using same technique we used earlier. To render these elements bring it into a high resolution as .Psd with alpha channel enabled.

Create Futuristic Berserker Scene in Photoshop

20.Step

Fw more steps. At first add cones to our work in Photoshop and edit them using same technique that you use earlier (with Layer masks, Gradients maps, Transform tool etc.).

Create Futuristic Berserker Scene in Photoshop

21.Step

Now go to Deviant and download some wires files. I use these wires. Add wires behind the our main object and merge it.

Create Futuristic Berserker Scene in Photoshop

22.Step

And final step. Our work is already ready, but you can add more details to make it more efective, for example you can add more lights, fire. And that's it. Our work is complete.

Create Futuristic Berserker Scene in Photoshop

Final Result: Futuristic Berserker Scene

Create Futuristic Berserker Scene in Photoshop

I understand that it is hard to create effect like this in you aren't professional design as in this effect you need to use almost all common design software (Poser, Cinema4D, 3DsMax and Photoshop). That's why to facilitate your study we add to downloadable file, not only Psd file of this effect, but also all Poser, Cinema4D, 3DsMax object files that you will need in this tutorial. Totally in this downloadable file we add 7 file that will facilitate your study.

How To Create Dark Surreal Photo Manipulation

In this Photo manipulation tutorial, you will learn how to create a dark surreal scene using few Photoshop techniques and a lot of stock images. Following this tutorial, you will learn how to add a dark unsubstantial effect to your image. We will start this tutorial with Cinema4D, and then we will use a lot of photo manipulation techniques, like blending modes, cloning and we will work with colors and filters. So let's start to learn new techniques.

Stocks Used

Final Image Preview

How To Create Dark Surreal Photo Manipulation

1.Step - Body Rendering

First I'll render a human body shape using Poser. I chose a pose from the default selection and tweaked it a little bit to que this shape.

How To Create Dark Surreal Photo Manipulation

I exported the figure to Cinema4D and simply added a light object, placed it on the upper right side of the body and added a floor object with shadows set to soft.

How To Create Dark Surreal Photo Manipulation

I rendered it at 300DPI 5000x5000pxl to get full quality on the image. (Be sure to check also the alpha channels extract it easily from the background)

2.Step - Placement

Open a new document in Photoshop: 11 inches wide x 17 inches high at 300dpi, drag the render and resize it to fit the image. Unlock the background layer and paint it black with the Paint bucket tool (G)

How To Create Dark Surreal Photo Manipulation

Tilt the body to get a more dynamic effect on the image. The floor needs to be filled up now that it doesn't cover perfectly the lower part. Create a new layer and place it under the render layer, rename it "floor fill".Grab the Rectangular Marquee tool (M) and draw the rectangle, click right and select "transform selection" to match the space that needs to be completed and fill it with white. Use a gradient layer style to match the tones on the floor. It does not have to be perfect as we are going to replace the floor with a new one.

How To Create Dark Surreal Photo Manipulation

3.Step - Color Adjustments

Create a new group and rename it "Color Adjustments" we are going to the set layers regarding all the coloring of the image in this folder. Since this is going to be a very monochromatic piece, this folder will be on top of everything we do from now on and will be changed as we progress with our illustration. Add a new gradient adjustment layer with the following colors:

How To Create Dark Surreal Photo Manipulation

From now on, all layers under this particular adjustment layer will be colored with the gradient above, so we only have to worry about the contrast and levels of the images, we'll be incorporating to the manipulation.

4.Step - Sky

Open the Sky and land stock image. Place it on your document under the "floor fill" layer, resize it to fil as much of the canvas as possible and rotate it to match the position of the ground.

How To Create Dark Surreal Photo Manipulation

Grab the Clone stamp tool (S) with a large Soft brush (hardness 0) and start cloning parts of the canvas that are missing sky. You can also clone more clouds to fit your image.

How To Create Dark Surreal Photo Manipulation

5.Step - Ground

Grab The sand stock and place it on your document above the main render. Just like you did with the sky stock, resize is to fit as much of the ground part as possible. Then rotate it to fit the inclination.

How To Create Dark Surreal Photo Manipulation

Add a Layer mask and start erasing all the parts that overlap with the sky and the render. You can use a normal Soft brush with the foreground color set to black to start erasing or help yourself using the Rectangular Marquee tool. Erase parts of the floor to blend with the render so it seems that the body is buried on the sand.

How To Create Dark Surreal Photo Manipulation

Go to Image -> Adjustments -> Brightness and Contrast and apply the next settings:

How To Create Dark Surreal Photo Manipulation

6.Step - Lightning

Go to Layer -> New adjustment layers -> Brightness and Contrast and apply the next settings. Move the layer into the "Color adjustments" folder. This will enhance the lightning in the final image.

How To Create Dark Surreal Photo Manipulation

Create a new layer over the sky the body and the sand layers and clip mask each one of them by holding ALT and clicking between the layers. Rename them "Shadows and highlights". Your layer should look something like this:

How To Create Dark Surreal Photo Manipulation

Select the "Shadows and highlights" layer masked to the sky and grab a large Soft brush with 20% opacity. Select white as your foreground color and gently brush over the upper right side of the image. This will be our main light source for the objects on our scene.

How To Create Dark Surreal Photo Manipulation

Set your foreground color to black and brush over the other side of the sky where there would be no light. Do the same on the sand and on the body looking carefully where the light would fall on the objects as well as the shadows. This will create a more dramatic environment to our image.

7.Step - Worms/Maggots

Grab the worm stock and extract it from its background. Create a new folder and name it "worms/maggots". This will be where we put all of the little details that will make our composition interesting. Put the worm inside the carpet and transform it to fit the image. Apply the next setting to make it fit the lightning:

How To Create Dark Surreal Photo Manipulation

Just like we did on the last step, create a new layer and clip mask it. Paint with white the parts that need to be brighter to match the lightning.

How To Create Dark Surreal Photo Manipulation

Open your other worm stocks and do the same. Keep a balance and try not to overdo your composition.

How To Create Dark Surreal Photo Manipulation

Each time you place a new element, make sure you create a new layer under it and brush the ground with a Soft brush hardness 0 opacity to about 25% and create subtle shadows.

8.Step - Details

Keep adding some more elements. Here are some things I rendered in cinema4D to help fill my image. I used some rust textures set to "overlay" to help me give a rotten look to some elements. Add things like a chopstick to create a surreal feeling.

9.Step - Arms

I used poser again to render some arm poses, this was the one that fitted the image the best.

How To Create Dark Surreal Photo Manipulation

Place the arm in your document you can create a new group to manage all the things concerning the arms. Clip mask a new layer and paint some shadows and highlight just like we did before.

How To Create Dark Surreal Photo Manipulation

To make the abstract light portal, download The texture resource and grab one of the textures. Use the Polygonal Lasso tool to make a selecion around the part we wish to use.

How To Create Dark Surreal Photo Manipulation

Set the layer blending mode to "lighten" and apply the next settings:

How To Create Dark Surreal Photo Manipulation

Place the texture layer above the "arm" layer. Use the Eraser tool (E) and erase some of the edges of the texture around the hand to blend it to the scene.

How To Create Dark Surreal Photo Manipulation

Duplicate the layer and place it around the hand. Do this many times to form a circle around the hand. Erase the parts that cover too much of the arm.

How To Create Dark Surreal Photo Manipulation

Merge all the layers and clip mask a new layer to create shadows to fit the lightning. Create a new layer above the texture and set its layer mode to "screen". Grab a round Soft brush and the the opacity of the brush to 25%. Start brushing with white, little blobs of light and some highlights around the portal.

How To Create Dark Surreal Photo Manipulation

Grab the Eye stock and extract it from its background. Apply the next settings:

How To Create Dark Surreal Photo Manipulation

Place it above the arm layer on the hand. Used the Eraser tool to delete any hard edges.

How To Create Dark Surreal Photo Manipulation

To create more light effects behind the portal and blend better the stock create a new layer, place it under the texture and arm layers and fill it with black. Go to Filter -> Noise -> Add noise. Use an amount of 70% and check the monochromatic option.

How To Create Dark Surreal Photo Manipulation

Go to Filter -> Blur -> Radial Blur and apply the next settings:

How To Create Dark Surreal Photo Manipulation

Set the layer blending mode to "Linear Dodge", duplicate the layer 3 times select and merge them (CTRL+E). Set this layer mode to "lighten"and place the center of the layer where all the lines join right under the portal. Make a selection with the Polygonal lasso tool and erase the parts of the layer that you dont need.

How To Create Dark Surreal Photo Manipulation

Using the Eraser tool with a large soft round brush delete all the hard edges to create a smooth outline, then apply the next settings:

Duplicate the "arm" group and merge it. Flip the layer horizontaly and resize it. Use levels to lower its brightnes. Go to Filter -> Blur -> Gaussian blur and set the amount to 4 pixels. This will give some depth to the image.

How To Create Dark Surreal Photo Manipulation

10.Step - Final Details

Create a new layer over the "Color Adjustments" group and set the blending mode to "screen" Grab a round brush with an opacity of 50% with a blue color to paint some contrasting light details. I also used Apophysis to render some fractal blobs to give further detail, but you can use any other fractal stock. Just be sure to match the blue tone.

How To Create Dark Surreal Photo Manipulation

I also added some more shadows to improve the look of the scene.

10.Step - Closing

Save your image as a .jpeg with full quality, open that again in photoshop and duplicate the layer. Go to Filter -> Other -> Highpass and set radius to 3px. This will sharpen the image. Set the layer blending mode to "Overlay" and bring down its opacity to 60%.

How To Create Dark Surreal Photo Manipulation

Go to Image -> Image size and size it down to 900x1300 pxl. Save it again as a .jpeg to achieve maximum quality. Here is the final result:
