Snapshot Sunday – Shooting Portraits of Strangers

Street photography is one of the most common variations in the world of photography. You will most probably see street photographs in various projects in the portfolio of a usual photographer either a professional or just a hobbyist. Likewise, taking human portraits is also one of the most common subjects in photography. However, one amazing photographer based in Singapore have come up with the idea of using his love of street photography in capturing  portraits  of strangers on their most natural state.

Snapshot Sunday - Shooting Portraits of Strangers

Danny Santos II, a graphic designer and a freelance photographer started taking pictures of strangers few years ago in the streets of Singapore every weekend. His series called “Portraits of Strangers” wherein he took more than a hundred photographs of strangers had gone viral because of it’s unique concept. Aside from having fun in the process, Danny’s goal is to convey the overall image of the beauty and natural energy of Orchard Road through the different characters found in this busy street of Singapore.

“The one thing I wanted to capture with every portrait was that ‘unguarded’ natural look… that look that moved me in the first place when I spotted them in the street… the look that can give even just a little bit of honest yet mysterious sneak peek to who they are without actually knowing them.” - Danny Santos II

Each of the portraits are truly mesmerizing. Each has a unique look that somehow tells the story behind each character. Here are some of our favorites from the series:

Enchanting Dream Scenes By Maria Snegireva

Setting yourself apart from other talented designers or photographers can be difficult; it helps to have a certain focus or eye for something unusual and beautiful.

Designer Maria Snegireva honed her professional skills while working on fashion and lifestyle magazine Marie Claire UA, and she embarked out on her own in 2010. She knew her Photoshop skills would enhance her imagery and creations, but it took a vision for dream-like photo collages to turn her fantasy into a reality.

Look closely at Maria’s art and you’ll discover a delightful blend of the real and the imaginary. Every photo is magical and bright, with the aid of vintage effects. Human models are incorporated into her artwork to complement the natural and dreamlike settings. What results is a unique style that borrows elements from fairy tales and other feel-good narratives.

You! Be Inspired! – The Sinking World of Andreas Franke

Underwater photography is one of the most challenging creative fields out there. The love of diving combined with the skills in producing great photographs is a unique characteristic that underwater photographers have. One such artist is Andreas Frankewho is famous of his still lifes and surreal effects planned precisely. His love for travelling and passion for scuba diving makes his pictures cross the boundaries between real life and fantasy.

In his most notable project called “The Sinking World“, Andreas Franke brings a strange, forgotten underwater world back to life by capturing some stills of sunken ships, then recreated what life could have been like aboard the ship with real actors. The amazing images are displayed on the deck of the shipwrecks where divers and art lovers can see his underwater gallery.

The first one was The Vandenberg Project, featuring a gallery of surreal photographs of the sunken ship off the coast of Florida and combined the stills with images of staged actors representing everyday life, thus, creating a re-imagined and forgotten world of the sunken giant.

Dina Goldstein and the Darker Side of Fairy Tales

Princesses in general, with the help of Walt Disney, have always been described as damsels in distress and fair ladies that usually end up marrying a prince and living happily ever after in some far away land. Of course, most fairy tales these days depict these princesses as such in order to make their characters and their stories inspiring and entertaining for kids.

However, in the world of adults, we all know that these happy endings don’t always happen. In fact, there are times that what’s happening in real life is the reverse of these fairy tales. So it does make a lot of people wonder how the lives of these fairy tale princesses would end up if they live in the 21st century. Fortunately, a photographer from Canada has given these thoughts some life through ten interesting photo rendition of the famed Disney Princesses.

The series was created by Vancouver-based photographer – Dina Goldstein and is entitled Fallen Princesses. The collection places the fairy tale characters in modern day scenarios that show realistic as opposed to the usual happily ever after ending that most of us is accustomed to.

According to Goldstein, her observation on how young girls have developed a fascination and interest in Disney Princesses has led to her quest to find the real origins of such fairy tales. She then reviewed the original brothers Grimm’s stories and found out that most of these fairy tales have very dark and sometimes gruesome aspects. This was the time when Goldstein re-imagined these princesses and how they would have lived in the present.

Although Goldstein admits that she had very limited funds to create her photo series, she continued on with the project and decided to post the images online. Surprisingly, the photo series received a lot of positive feedback from bloggers and internet users all over the world.

Another project by Goldstein entitled “In the Dollhouse” focuses on Barbie and Ken. Just like the Disney Princesses featured in Fallen Princesses who seemingly live perfect lives, Goldstein once again injected a dose of darkness and reality into these characters. The photo series tells the story of Barbie who is placed in a pretentious and dysfunctional marriage with Ken. The end of the series shows an emotionally troubled Barbie who is unable to stay in the situation that she’s in causing her make a very difficult and deadly decision.

The Underwater Project of Mark Tipple

Photography as much as creativity has no limits. This idea was well  proven by Australian documentary photographer Mark Tipple, who took photography to the next level. He takes pictures underwater and beneath the waves where some of the most amazing sights are waiting to be captured.

Mark Tipple has been taking rare moments with his camera for three years now focusing on the faces of nature and aiming to create social change by working closely with various organizations in Australia and surrounding countries. One of his most applauded  and inspiring works called “The Underwater Project” has taken underwater photography to a more distinct and emotionally driven creative discipline. The project is an on-going reportage highlighting Australia’s relationship to the oceans around it. Mark aims to connect the different areas of his work to bring light to stories that traditional media shies away from.

You The Designer is very fortunate to ask some questions to Mark to give us some interesting background notes about the project. Check out the short interview below together with few of his breathtaking photographs in the project.

YTD: Of all possible subjects, why underwater photography?

MARK: I’ve always been around the ocean, to an extent that if I’m inland for more than a day I start to get a weird nervous tick in my shoulder, not sure why but it seems to go away when I’m back on the coast. I used to make surfing movies back in the early 2000′s, but in all honesty they weren’t very good, so I stopped chasing that market, and about a decade later I thought to take a camera into the ocean again and see if I could find a different approach to surf photography.

YTD: Who or what inspired you to push through this project?

MARK: In my other documentary work I try to force the camera to lose it’s presence when I’m photographing people – a variety of approaches work but it’s all to the end goal of being able to photograph people without them feeling scared or self-conscious of how they’re going to look on camera. From the first few photos I made underwater the presence of the camera wasn’t a hindrance at all, as most people are trying to escape the wave crashing above and weren’t too concerned about the camera. This interested me, and kept me going.

YTD: Can you share us your creative process? What are your tools and equipment?

MARK: I shoot with a basic Canon Dslr, I used to use the 7D but have switched to the 5D Mk 2 & 3, and it’s housed in an Aquatech underwater housing. I either use the Tokina 10-17mm fisheye or the Canon 16-35, depending on what the shoot is. I use Churchill swim fins as well, to give me more speed underwater.

I keep a low profile when I’m in the water, usually due to the onset of hypothermia (I get cold really quickly), but I dive underwater fairly early and get into position for where the swimmer will be diving through, and just as the wave starts to break I hold the button down and use the motor drive to capture what happens as the white water crashes around.

YTD: The photographs are simply breathtaking! Any personal favorites?

MARK: I love the ones that I’ve been pounded on as well as the swimmers. There was one that we made in the remote South Australian ocean where both myself and my friend ended up being smashed to shore by waves that were twice the size we thought they were. Entitled ‘Deep’, it shows my friend stretching out to make it under the wave, we weren’t so luck on the next one. ‘Deep’ and the first photo called ‘Escape’ would be my favourites, as they’re both a step forward in the series.

YTD: Future plans you would like to share for this on going series?

MARK: I’ve been working on a number of short films to accompany the photo series, basically about people who do cool things with the ocean. So far I’ve followed two surfers as they search for new waves, a family of professional surfers and surfboard shapers, and a social entrepreneur who does yoga on the beach before working with an African community, I love hearing how the ocean inspires or influences people’s lives. I don’t have any real message through both the photo or film series, but if either/or speak to people about how the ocean is part of all of us then I’d be stoked to play a part in it’s preservation.

YTD: Thank you Mark for spending some time with us. Anyone you would like to be thankful for?

MARK: My friends and family foremost, especially those I’ve asked to swim for me in the middle of winter. After three years of shooting the series I’m still stoked when a print sale comes through or a simple email of support, I could never have thought that a simple series of people swimming under waves could have such a huge reception. I’m stoked!

Mark’s amazing underwater photographs have been well recognized around the world making him as one of the most unique surf photographers out there. ”Surf photography’s been around forever, I wanted something different” Mark says. His works have appeared in publications worldwide such as The Australian, The Telegraph, The BBC, The Independent, National Geographic and Discovery Channel.
