Ideal Modifying Tool for Modern Day Photography

Photographers and ordinary people who want to spruce up or enhance their digital pictures can use Photoshop to achieve their objective. We want to shoot photos that would catch the attention and interest of our audience. Through these well-timed photos, we want to enthrall them and engage them. In these modern times, there are simply a lot of things that we can do using modern technology so that we can transform what seems to be a staid-looking picture into a real head-turner. Whether you are a professional or an amateur photographer, Photoshop can provide you with an ideal modifying tool so that you can enhance your digital pictures.

Why Choose Photoshop

Photoshop is a popular digital photo editing software which you can use to enhance or repair your digital pictures. With Adobe Photoshop, you will be able to edit your pictures, using a wide range of applications, so that you are able to inject a professional appeal to them.

Photoshop is used by amateur and professional photographers to modify, enhance, edit and restore plain and original digital photos and transform them into something that is stylish and appropriate for our specific requirements and use. If you want to create a material that is good enough for your presentation or inclusion to periodicals and product folders, then it is imperative that you use Photoshop in order to enhance your pictures.

Photoshop Makes the Photo Shoot Simple and Easy

With this advanced photo editing software you will no longer have to obtain the advance skills of a professional photographer in order to create pictures like the professionals do. In fact, you would not find the necessity to fully understand what exposure compensation, shutter speeds and white balance mean and their significance in the photo shoot. The only thing that you must do is simply take those pictures and print copies of the shots you made.

State of the art DSLRs are no longer essential and even if you are using the standard digital camera, you can still create high quality pictures with the use of Photoshop. Through this photo editing software you can easily make the necessary correction in the light balance, exposure compensation and color saturation. This means that you have fewer things to think about and consider when doing the photo shoot. This is definitely an essential tool if you consider yourself the point-and-shoot type of person.

Photoshop Rectifies Most of the Photo Shoot Miscues and Issues

You can rely on Photoshop in the event you make an erroneous decision on the lighting settings for your photo shoot. This means that you can make the necessary correction so that you have a final copy that appears like you have taken the picture in the most ideal light setting. In addition to this, close up shots will no longer be a formidable challenge for you. This type of picture is usually the most difficult one to make as it amplifies even the slightest mistakes. The good news is that you can now take those close-up shots with confidence as you can easily make the necessary corrections and solve any issues later using Photoshop.

Photographs which were not able to stand the test of time are now given the chance to recover their lost luster, literally and figuratively. You can use Photoshop to restore and recover damaged and faded photographs. All you have to do is create a digital copy of the old photographs using a scanner and through Photoshop, you can easily transform defective, tattered and washed out photos in pictures that appear like they have been taken just a few seconds ago.

What is great about Photoshop is that it allows you to accomplish these things and a lot more. You can banish those wrinkles in your digital photos, make the face appear fuller or slimmer, get rid of the pimples and inject a paler or healthier color to the face.

There are several options and features that you can use in order to enhance your digital photos. As far as photographers are concerned, Adobe Photoshop is an essential tool. You will learn that it provides a lot of possibilities and discover that you can create loads of high quality pictures despite the not-so-good and less than ideal circumstances behind the shots.SB

A Quick Photo Editing Tutorial: Creating a Dreamy Effect on Photoshop

Welcome to another tutorial from youthedesigner.com. In this photo editing tutorial, we will be turning a regular photograph into something dreamy. The effect is also called artistic blur. In traditional photography, this is made possible by adding special filters to the lenses of the camera, thus simulating a blurry effect.

In photoshop (or any other similar image editing applications), we can achieve this effect in just a few steps. So sit back and relax as we tour you through the process. And at the end of this tutorial, we hope to see what you have done with your photos by posting a link to the image in the comments section below; we’d love to see what you have made!

Our final image will be similar to the image below:

photo-editing-19

PREREQUISITES:

  • Adobe Photoshop
  • Photograph

STEP 1: LOADING THE IMAGE

The very first step that we have to do is to load up our image on Photoshop. There are two ways of doing this: 1) you can browse the image with your file manager then right click and open with Photoshop or 2) you can start Photoshop and load it from there by going to File > Open and then browsing for the image. Either way, it’s your preference, whichever you feel most comfortable with.

photo-editing-01

Opening Image in the File Manager

photo-editing-02

STEP 2: RENAMING LAYER/S

After successfully loading the image in Photoshop, it’s a good practice to rename the layer/s that corresponds with it. This is also true to any project of arbitrary scale, since renaming your layers makes you keep track of your changes easily and can easily point out which does which on some extent.

Rename the layer present in our Layers Dialog labeled Background by double clicking on the layer name. A dialog window will appear enabling you to input the name of the layer. Let’s call it “base layer”.

photo-editing-04

STEP 3: CREATING THE DREAMY EFFECT

And finally, we’re on the gist of the tutorial. With base layer still active, duplicate it by right clicking on the layer entry then choosing Duplicate Layer.

photo-editing-05

A dialog window will appear again asking you for the layer details. Type a new name for the layer – “small blur”.

photo-editing-06

With layer small blur active, go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur.

photo-editing-07

On the dialog window that appears, type in a value (in pixels) which would correspond to a small blurring effect on our image. We had ours set to 15 pixels.

photo-editing-08

Next step is to select again the base layer, then repeat the step that we did to layer small blur, except this time, we’ll name it large blur, with a blur value of something between 50 pixels to 100 pixels. Move layer large blur above small blur.

photo-editing-09

And now comes the fun part: adding layer effects. Select “small blur” layer and switch the layer blending mode to Overlay. Next, select “large blur” layer and switch the layer blending mode to Screen. Immediately, you’ll notice the effect appear on our image, making it “artistically blurry”, which is the effect that we want.

photo-editing-10

photo-editing-11

To further enhance the look of our image, we will emphasize the eyes of the model by doing some quick techniques with sharpening and masking.

Select again “base layer”, duplicate it and label the duplicate layer as “sharpen layer”.

photo-editing-12

With the “sharpen layer” active, go to Filter > Sharpen > Unsharp Mask. And on the dialog window that appears, drag the preview such that the most important part of your image that you want to add sharpening on is focused on the preview. Tweak the settings as you wish. You could also refer to the settings we have used below.

photo-editing-13

photo-editing-14

STEP 4: CREATING LAYER MASKS

After applying the Unsharp Mask filter, you’ll notice a considerable sharpening applied to our image. However, we don’t want to sharpen the whole image, instead we only want the eye parts to be sharpened, creating an even more dramatic effect.

To non-destructively do this, we will be using layer masks to mask out parts of the image other than the eye.

We’ll begin by selecting “sharpen layer” and clicking the “add layer mask” button at the bottom of the Layers Dialog.

photo-editing-15

You will notice a black square added beside the original “sharpen layer” and is currently active. This is our layer mask. Currently, what it does is it makes the whole layer visible, as indicated by the plain white color. We do not want this, we only want the eye parts of the layer to be white. To address this issue, we have to fill our layer mask entirely with black then paint the whites later.

Change your foreground color to black then press shift + F5 to invoke the Fill command. On the dialog window that appears, choose Foreground Color as the usage option. This will use black to fill the entire layer mask.

photo-editing-16

You’ll notice the effects of the sharpening gone already since we have entirely filled the layer mask with black which literally means erasing all which is present on that layer. To bring back the sharpness only on selected areas, we’ll manually paint on the areas which are of interest to us, in this case, the eyes. Be sure that up to this point, the layer mask is still active and not any other layer/s.

Enable your Brush Tool (B), make your foreground color white, and then choose an appropriate brush from the brush options above. After you’ve done that, paint over on the eyes  and you’ll notice the sharpness coming to life.

And that’s about it! We hope you enjoyed this quick tutorial and we’re hoping to hear what you have done so far! If you have any comments and suggestions, please drop us a note below. See you next time!

Basic Photo editing in Photoshop

Are you one of those amateur photographers that love to take pictures but can’t seem to get them just right, compared to the photos taken by the pros? If the answer to this question is “yes”, you may want to have a look at Photoshop, which makes it easy to produce professionally looking photos even if the original was less than perfect.

Even the best need help on occasion, and this being said it is no big secret that all of the professional photographers use Photoshop in the same fashion as we are about to explain. In this digital age, no photo gets published as is, but all of them are edited digitally first. Even the pros can’t shoot perfect pictures all the time, and use the software to get rid of red eyes, fingers over lenses visible in the photo, bad lighting, basically all the common flaws, and it’s all easy to adjust in Photoshop.

All it takes is Photoshop to fix whatever is wrong with the picture. If you ever read a model magazine, and seen those perfect shots, know that they have all been edited in Photoshop to look perfect. They use it to smoothen the skin of the models, adjust the color, in fact using Photoshop they could make a fat person look thin or vice versa.

Below is the course of action to take to clean up any image, and make it look like it was professionally shot. Keep in mind that you need to perform the tasks in the order as described here for best results. Changing the order may result in some optical side effects making the image actually worse, instead of better.

Before doing anything else, always remove red eye syndrome, if the photo in question has it. Photoshop comes with a built in tool that not only reduces red eye syndrome but can remove it completely with just a few clicks of the mouse. This always works best on an otherwise unedited image.

The second action we take is to brighten up the image using the brightness and contrast functions that come with the Photoshop software package. Brighter colors always look better than dark images, so brighten it up by fiddling with the tools. Of course if the image was too bright to begin with the opposite holds true and the tools will be used to make the image darker. Just adjust the switches until you like the result you are seeing.

Lastly we will remove anything from the image we do not want in there. With Photoshop you can remove distracting objects, or replace the entire background if needed, and it’s all done with just a few clicks.

By going through the above in the order as described, you can make any image look like it was shot professionally, and the more often you use the features, the better you will become at getting everything just right. In time you will start experimenting with the more advanced features, and before you know it you will be editing images like a pro, ready to turn overweight people into super models!

Photoshop Careers

A lot of websites today carry news, views and tutorials about Photoshop and its many uses. Some even display beautifully edited but life like Photoshop images that make you wonder what the real image started out like.

Photoshop they say is the best photo editing and web graphic software available that can be used by professionals and amateurs alike. Its various versions help you to create stunning graphics and enhance or edit beautiful photographs as well as restore old ones at the click of a button. There are tutorials on the internet that teach you how to work with most versions and features of Photoshop.

At both professional and amateur levels these tutorials allow people to express themselves above an image that already exists. While most learners are able to master these skills through rigid practice some people sadly just don’t seem to get the hang of it.

Job Opportunities

This is where a Photoshop artist steps in. A professional photo editor can give your photographs that extra touch that is the needed. People need decent images for adverts, magazines, books other publications, such as social networking sites and blogs to name just a few. Red eye reduction, unnecessary blurs, cropping extras, sharpening images and overall correction of the image can be done easily by amateurs but adding missing components is something only professionals have a good hand at.

Photoshop professionals are needed in most media related industries beginning with advertisement agencies, publication houses, web designers, and movie and television promotion in addition to stock photography sites. Apart from this Photoshop editors are hired to restore old and languishing photographs to design greeting cards and fun apparel.

With a certification in Photoshop photo editing and manipulation, the photo artist can become a successful web designer and attach himself to a web design studio or freelance as a web designer. The program allows you to successfully break and join images for easy upload on web pages. Web designers with the significant qualifications can create banners, interactive buttons, animations and graphics that all go to make a successful web page. Web designers with Photoshop experience are paid more than their counterparts and they are hired to design custom WebPages or to create ready website templates that users ultimately customize themselves.

Photoshop professionals are hired for photo correction and restoration and are often called “photo-doctors” at this level. Photoshop artists save old photographs from damage and restore them to their original glory. They also correct common mistakes like red eye correction, image blurs, background changes, clarity, and significant image cropping. Furthermore Photoshop artists with their varied skills can use features like the Patch Tool, Healing Brush and Clone Stamp to cover fades and tears in old photos to make them noticeably new without being too obvious.

Photoshop artists are also hired for their ability to add a portrait or print like edge to existing photos. Lots of artists are offering this service to families that wish their photos to be portrayed. Before, families, their dogs and other pets were made to sit for hours together till the artist finished his sketch or painting, today all you do is scan a photograph and send it to a professional who using Photoshop techniques can transforms it into a sketch or painting in a matter of minutes.

A Photoshop artist or editor can be hired by publication houses to work their magic in newspapers, magazines, online news papers, book and CD/DVD covers and theme based merchandise. Photoshop artists have a flair and knowledge for text in pictures and videos which is a key requirement within the media industry.

Conclusion

Photoshop is an easy to learn photo editing and manipulating software that promises remarkable results and creates a number of fun and creative job opportunities for artists. It is compatible with most operating systems and comes with easy to use instructions.

Correcting Exposure with the Shadows & Highlights Tool

Bring out the best in your photos by correcting exposure problems using the Shadows & Highlights tool.

Introduction

Today we’re going to take a look at an incredibly useful, amazing tool: the Shadow/Highlight adjustment.

Often when taking pictures, it’s difficult, sometimes impossible, to get perfect exposure on everything within the frame. Especially shooting outdoors with a bright sun and shadows on the landscape you’re bound to over—or under-expose parts of your shot. The Shadow/Highlight adjustment is another great tool to help you maximize the potential of your shots.

Let’s take a look.

Shadows/Highlights Overview

Image Description

First, this tool doesn’t come as an adjustment layer yet, so you should duplicate your image: Ctrl+J (Win) or Command+J (Mac). This way you’ll be able to work on the image and, if you need, revert back any time.

So, we have our duplicate. Let’s get to work on it.

Second, open up the Shadows/Highlights adjustment: Image > Adjustments > Shadows/Highlights…

Image Description

At the bottom of the adjustment window you’ll see a Show More Options checkbox. Make sure it’s checked. The additional options may look a little complex to first-time users, but we’ll go over them now. And trust me, you’ll appreciate the controls.

Our third step is optional. This is what suits me. There are default values set that come with Photoshop. These are unnecessary as you’ll use different values for each image you process. I like to start my work with a clean slate so I suggest to set the Amount, Tonal Width, and Radius for both the Shadows and Highlights to 0 (all the way to the left). Set the Color Correction and Midtone Contrast in the Adjustments box to 0 (that’s in the center). Next, hit the button at the bottom, Save as Defaults. Now every time you open Shadows/Highlights you’ll have it set with no changes to the image.

Amount, Tonal Width, and Radius

You should see three sliders within both the Shadows and Highlights sections. We’re going to work with the Shadows sliders first.

Image Description

Amount

Pretty self explanatory—this is how much you’ll affect the image. (It’s also the lone visible slider when the Show More Options checkbox is not selected.) This is where you’ll lighten the shadows or darken the highlights respectively in the Shadow or Highlight sections. This slider paints with a wide brush. I doubt you’d ever want to use it alone. We’ll refine it with the next two sliders.

Image Description

Tonal Width

Here we define how much of the tonal range will be affected. Leaving the slider closer to 0% will mean only the darkest of the dark shadows will be affected. Increasing the percentage, sliding to the right, will start to affect more of the midtones.

Image Description

Radius

The radius slider will determine how the adjusted areas blend with the rest of the image. You’ll want to input a value above 0px—if not it’ll leave the image looking a little grey and washed-out. You’ll see how this slider really affects the image quite nicely. Values from 3-15px, more or less, add real crispness—a nice harshness—to the image. This look I really like. Around 20px and above the effect blends or blurs much more discreetly in the image. The higher you go, the more it blends.

Note

You may find, as I have, that you can’t really perfect each slider alone. The way I usually do it is I push the Amount slider to around 35%; push the Tonal Width slider up; and then push the Radius slider to around 5px. Then I can see what the adjustment is doing and I refine it from there.

Highlights

These work the same as the Shadow sliders—just instead of decreasing shadows they decrease the highlights. If you do find you need to work on the highlights, take it easy: Any work you do here has a large impact on the overall contrast. I find that I don’t often use the Highlight section. Find out what works for you.

Adjustments

We’ve come to the last two sliders: Color Correction and Midtone Contrast. The Color Correction slider should really be called a Saturation slider as its sole function is to increase/decrease saturation. I use it to readjust the saturation to what it looked like before the Shadows/Highlights adjustment. Further saturation adjustments I prefer to do with an adjustment layer that can be altered more easily.

The Midtone Contrast slider can be used to increase or decrease the midtone contrast. Nice and simple: aptly named this time. Again, I do the same as I did with the Color Correction slider, this time returning the contrast to how it looked originally.

Rollover Image

In the picture above, after making adjustments to Shadows, I readjusted the Color Correction and Midtone Contrast sliders to make the leaf (circled) look as similar to the original as possible. (No changes were made in the Highlight section.) After correcting the Shadows/Highlights, I can work more specificially on the Hue/Saturation or customize the image with other adjustment layers.

Examples

Image adjustments are up to the editor’s preference. So there’s no right or wrong way to do this. Nonetheless, here are a couple examples of pictures optimized with Shadows/Highlights. I’ll put my settings alongside the images, so you can see what I did. Try using this tool yourself. I think you’ll find that this is a great tool for optimizing your images and making little fixes that may make the difference between a good picture and a great one.

Boudoir Photography: How to Enhance Your Images with Photoshop Actions

Boudoir photography requires great lighting, flattering poses, and often the use of photo editing using Photoshop actions.  When doing Boudoir photography, you want the woman you are photographing to feel special and beautiful.  And while you still want the photo to portray her, Photoshop can help enhance her most positive traits and minimize any flaws or areas where she is self-conscience. This photo was submitted and edited by Camilla Binks of Camilla Photography.

Here is the before and after Camilla submitted plus how she achieved it:

Before:

The step-by-step:

  1. Started with the Touch of Light Free Photoshop action with 20% opacity brush a bit on hair, face near carpet and hand to brighten up skin and select areas
  2. Next I used the Magical Clarity action from the Back of Tricks to increase midtone contrast
  3. Then I used All in the Details- Color Action which pulls out details and pops color of the image
  4. Patch and Clone tool to remove vein on forehead and bags under eyes.
  5. To pull out spot colors, I used the Color Finder Brush from the Bag of Tricks at 20% brushed everywhere except skin and hair
  6. Then I ran the Magic Skin – skin smoothing Photoshop action for a creamy skin
  7. Used Extreme Fill Flash from the Quickie Collection at 10% layer opacity
  8. Finished with Quickie Collection-Snap Photoshop action (I always use this!)

The right package for the hobby photographer

For hobby photographers, choosing the right version of a Photoshop suite can be a daunting task, so in order to make the decision a little easier to make we will discuss the two available suites in this article.

As stated, users can choose from two separate suites, which are Photoshop CS and Photoshop Elements.
Contrary to popular belief, Elements is not a trimmed down version of the real thing, it is a standalone photo editing suite built separately from Photoshop CS and is intended as an alternative, not as a light version.

This being said, selecting the right software for photo editing will depend mostly on for what purpose you are editing the photos.

Photoshop Elements: The benefits

The current version of Elements is version 8 and is a more basic editor than Photoshop CS. This often makes the available tools easier to use but also limits the tasks to basic operations. All the obvious functions are there, like removal of red eye effects from pictures, applying tints etc., so if basic photo editing is the goal,
Elements should be all you require and more.

On the other hand, Elements contains other features that could make for a decisive factor in deciding which suite to choose over other editors, like integration with Adobes online Photoshop apps, that will allow users to edit images remotely and Elements comes with a generous 2GB of storage for your images. Elements also comes with an excellent organizer for your images, which certainly will be a feature many hobby photographers will like.

Photoshop CS: The Benefits

Photoshop CS may be a more advanced editing suite and therefore have a longer learning curve, but a user that persists will learn the skills and with it gain the ability to do complex editing on the images to a point where all other photo editors will fall short. On the other hand CS is the most expensive suite compared to Elements, so whether or not it is worth it will depend on what you will be using it for.

By learning how to properly use Photoshop CS a user will acquire skills that can benefit them in a career in this area, so for photographers looking for a way to turn pro, CS may be the only way to go, as it adds skills to your repertoire.

Learning those skills can be a quick process or as long as you want it to be, as there will be courses, tutorials and how to articles everywhere you turn. A simple search on Google, YouTube or your average article directory will spawn hundreds of pages filled with learning material about how to use the features of Photoshop. Users can decide to master the basics or become an expert in that chosen field. The possibilities are almost as endless as the functions in the software itself.

Overall, the reason for editing and the price of the suite will ultimately be the decisive factor on deciding which suite is the best option for you, hopefully the above will have contributed into making the decision a little easier.
