The Push Pin Way – The Interdisciplinary Work of Seymour Chwast

A list of contemporary graphic designers would be incomplete without Seymour Chwast. As co-founder of Push Pin Studios with fellow graphic designers Milton Glaser, Edward Sorel, and Reynold Ruffins, he worked on different projects that included poster designs, book illustrations, and magazine covers. His illustrations are characterized by his playful and expressive style. Critics haven’t been able to categorize his different works because of the different influences seen on each piece. It was eventually called the Push Pin Style — the diverse union of illustration and design derived, according to Chwast, not from premeditation but from the requisites of the assignments themselves. In 1985, he was awarded the AIGA Medal which is given to individuals for their outstanding contribution to the field of design. Museums such as the Museum of Modern Art, New York and the Library of Congress, Washington D.C. have his posters in their collections.

Here are samples of his simple yet brilliant designs. His influence on graphic design spanned decades of his hard work, it’s no wonder that most graphic designers know and try to imitate his style.

The Art of Typographic Flourishes: Vintage Typography Design Inspiration

A quick Google search using the term “flourish” gets different types of results. The word can refer to an extravagant gesture that’s meant to attract attention. Sometimes it can also pertain to an ornamental embellishment in writing. We’ve discussed the subject of typography with our articles on movie intertitles and the role of typography in graphic design. Now we’ll take a closer look at typographic flourishes.

Typographic flourishes are reminiscent of the Baroque period, where exaggerated motion and details are dominant. Two of the most beautiful characteristics of Baroque page design are ornate borders and typographic flourishes. They are often described as “curly bits added to make type look fancy.”

(Source)

Flourishes in penmanship used to be prominent in the writings of educated individuals. In the United States, Platt Rogers Spencer’s script writing style was commonly used from 1850 to 1925. Aptly called the Spencerian Script, it was adapted from other existing handwriting styles for business correspondence and personal letter-writing. The method was taught in schools and was one of the highlights of the Golden Age of Ornamental Penmanship.

Typographic flourishes are often seen on wedding invitations, but the uses of these fancy embellishments are not limited to formal correspondence. Flourishes are also used in designing logos and other printed materials. Take a look at these samples of posters, letterheads, and other graphic design projects with flourishes!

Beer Can Appreciation day (we’d like to believe) wasn’t just created to give people an excuse to drink more beer. A bit of research about beer cans would tell you that they do deserve our appreciation.

First, beer cans are relatively cheaper than beer bottles. They require minimal energy to produce and most of the materials used in these aluminum cans can be reused to manufacture new ones. Second, beer cans do a better job in preserving the beer’s flavor. Aluminum cans prevent beer from being “skunked” due to exposure from UV light. They are also very durable and contain lower oxygen levels than bottles which increases shelf life. Lastly, the variety of beer can designs makes them perfect collector’s items. And with beer cans that look as good as the ones above, you couldn’t blame people, like us, for being more interested in the cans than the booze!
